The Topeka shiner, a finger-long minnow, looks like a streamlined
goldfish. Listed as an endangered species in 1998, the shiner
is suffering from water pollution in its native streams. Pesticide-laden
runoff from fields and waste from animal factories reduce
water quality, and sediment buries the shiner's eggs. The
Sierra Club is working to demand better pollution controls
from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Environmental
Protection Agency.
Federally endangered.
