The Solutions

Click to Take Action Now! Oregonians deserve a plan for the management of Oregon's coastal rainforest that ensures for clean drinking water, wildlife habitat and recreational opportunities in abundance today and into the future. A change in management strategy that placed primary emphasis on habitat values and recreation opportunities promises to increase substantially the number of visits to the forest. At present, the recreation potential of the forests remains largely untapped due to management policies that emphasize commercial timber production over providing recreation opportunities. The proportion of logging roads to hiking and biking trail miles provides evidence of the historical neglect of the recreation potential of the forests.

The Sierra Club is working on a plan for balance in the Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests that would create biological reserves across the landscape for the preservation of clean water, wildlife, and recreation. Our vision for the future means thinking ahead to groves of old growth fir and pine, rivers running with salmon and steelhead, and wildlife of all species so plentiful that they no longer need to be labeled threatened or endangered. It means working together to make sure that communities have the resources they need, without devastating the ecosystems that support clean drinking water and abundant fish and wildlife. It means we can all continue to take pride in the Tillamook and Clatsop State Forests for generations to come.
