1. Sample Fine Print

For use in publicity about your outings, whether in newspaper, email. Err on the side of giving too much information, rather than too little.

Fine print: These outings are appropriate for people of all ages including children. Non-members welcome; sorry no dogs. Bring a friend! Free! Participants will be asked to sign a standard liability waiver. To see the waiver in advance, call a leader or go tohttp://www.sierraclub.org/outings/chapter/forms/index.asp.

2. Screening by Phone or Email

*** TELL or REMIND ABOUT LIABILITY WAIVER ***

  • Trail conditions: treacherous, snowy, icy, wet, muddy, etc.
  • What to wear: no jeans or dress boots; sturdy shoes; layers if winter weather;
  • Special equipment/skills if required: (snowshoes, water shoes, flashlight if dark)
  • If water outing: can they swim?
What to bring:
  • sunglasses
  • water & snack
  • camera
  • walking stick
  • trash bag
  • $ for parking or entrance fee
  • your own medication(s)

3. Press List

Create a list of areas newspapers, contacts & their deadlines.

4. Packing List for Leaders

MUST BRING:

  • first aid kit & sign up sheet/waiver, clipboard/pens 

WOULD BE NICE TO BRING:

  • Sierra Club Things: membership brochures & latest newsletter & future hikes list

PERSONAL COMFORT:

  • water & snack
  • extra gloves, scarf

OTHER:

  • camera
  • trash bags
  • trail map of the area
  • cell phone (not mandatory; is not a substitute for safety planning)
  • field guides: birds, trees, flowers
  • flashlight for evening walks
  • walking stick

5. Post-Outing List

  • write thank you note if someone was a guide
  • get photos developed
  • write article for newsletter & website
  • add new emails/phone #s to your outings contact list
