Achieving Clean Water With The Maryland Sierra Club 2015

Our waterways face a number of signifacant threats, including urban runoff, climate change and destruction of the natural landscape, and the forests whose role it is to clean our water and our air.

The Maryland Sierra Club's been working hard on advancing policies that reduce water pollution.  In the last few years, we have put in place needed funding and key regulations to curb water pollution.  On the county level, we are monitoring and supporting the enforcement of these regulations.  We are active in Montgomery County, Prince George's County, and Anne Arundel County working with local activists and coalitions to support putting in place quality green practices that enhance the quality of life in our neighborhoods and filter runoff.

We have many local volunteers who serve as leaders in campaigns aimed at protecting our forests, slowing sprawl, and advocating for smart growth.  In Charles County, local activists have the Mattawoman watershed from development projects.  In Anne Arundel county, local activists are fighting Crystal Springs, a huge development, that would destroy the last remaining forest in Annapolis.

Climate impacts are beginning to take a toll on our waterways.  The Maryland Sierra Club is working to adapt our waterways to climate change by supporting the Chesapeake Bay Program in their efforts to create climate resiliency for the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

All throughout the year, volunteers are welcome to join our efforts and participate in available opportunities to make a difference for our waterways.  Please join us for the many exciting campaigns by indicating your contact information and interest here:
