Global food demand is rapidly increasing -- following the current predicted population growth trends, global food demand is expected to double by 2050. This increase in demand places a huge pressure on the environment due to intensive land use, greenhouse gas emissions, and pollution problems associated with the agriculture industry. The current food production process is not sustainable for the long term.
