Keep Americans Safe from Mercury Pollution:
Take Action Now!
Since the federal government is failing to take leadership on this issue of mercury pollution—and is, in fact, trying to roll back existing mercury protections—it's up to state officials to lead the way. For example, Governor Blagojevich in Illinois recently announced a bold new rule to cut mercury pollution by 90%. If Illinois can take steps to protect its women and children from mercury, there is no reason that other states can't do the same.
Contact your Governor and encourage him or her to take steps to protect your state's women and children from mercury pollution. Here is a site that will help you find your governor's address. Below is a sample letter.
Subject: Making Clean Energy Investments Does Not Mean More Coal
Dear Governor XX,
I urge you to reject the President's pledge for more investment in coal. Coal destroys our land, fouls our air and water, and emits more mercury pollution than any other regulated U.S. source. On February 8, 2006, the University of North Carolina's Environmental Quality Institute released a study about mercury exposure in the U.S. population. Researchers found an alarming one in five women of childbearing age that tested for mercury levels above what the EPA considers safe. Exposure to mercury can lead to the inability to focus and pay attention, delayed language development, impaired memory, vision and motor coordination and problems processing information.
Clean energy investments in solar and wind power projects will create good jobs for America, improve our and reduce global warming pollution. When you invest in our energy future, please invest in true renewable energy, not more coal.
Sincerely,
(your name)
