"The rivers are coming to us," laughed one rain-drenched runner as she crossed the finish line. "Well, it IS Earth Day, after all!"

That good-natured spirit was reflected by many who showed up for the 2002 "Earth Day Walk/Run for the Rivers" in Forest Park on April 21. The event drew nearly 340 registered participants, from kids to 70-something year old youngsters. Our fun, 5K fund raiser was organized by EMG Sierra Club, the Open Space Council, and St. Louis Earth Day.

Runners competed for awards in their age groups; the top three fund raisers took home other great prizes donated by the Alpine Shop. The Grand Prize, appropriate for the wet climate, was a Wilderness Systems Cape Horn 17-foot kayak.

Many thanks to all who participated in, volunteered for, and sponsored this event! Sierra Club planners give special thanks to our terrific partners and to the American Lung Association for managing registrations and information requests.

We'll see you next year-rain or shine!
