We met three Tuesday mornings in October at Gateway Math, Science & Technology Elementary School on Jefferson Ave. not far from Downtown St. Louis, where member Bill Bennett teaches. In mid-October we finished the outdoor garden work. Now we're working inside the school's wonderful green house, helping students prepare for a winter crop of lettuce and radishes for the school cafeteria, and later to prepare plants for Mother's Day.

While we work, we discuss other projects we're promoting: testing soil for a "backyard" farmer's market in Sheila Pryor's Pine Lawn neighborhood; finding suppliers for Allona Morris' farmers' market in Velda City; and cheering on Audrey Wattler's spearheading of a community garden in Fenton. So we're discontinuing monthly evening meetings at the Sierra Club office in Maplewood.

Our schedule for Tuesday 10:00 a.m. "service meetings" at Gateway School will be:

Students preparing plants Nov. 9, Nov. 23
Dec. 7, Dec. 21
Jan. 4, Jan. 18
Feb. 1, Feb. 15
Mar. 1, Mar. 15, Mar. 29
Apr. 12, Apr. 26

We'll resume our outdoor work in the Spring, to keep the four vegetable beds organic, pesticide-free and herbicide-free. Let me know if you want to join us so I can give you specifics on how to get there. 314-994-7106.
