My name is Lyn Anthoney. I'm a wife, mother, and grandmother. I'm also like many of you concerned about our climate, conservation and the environmental crisis and what we can do to make the necessary changes to leave this planet habitable for the next generation. I believe that working with our local and statewide elected officials is a crucial step. I also feel strongly that a love for nature begins with our young people and families and will work to develop activities that will encourage their participation in Sierra Club programs such as camping, hiking, and cycling to encourage a love of the outdoors and nature.

I am a candidate for the Eastern Missouri Sierra Club Executive Committee and believe the Sierra Club and similar organizations are critical to protect the Earth's climate and limited natural resources. The Executive Committee is an opportunity for me to further support the club's mission. By background, I am a retired certified public accountant with a 45-year career in public practice and banking. Celeste and I practiced accounting in Illinois, then moved to St. Louis about 20 years ago. The practice clients included the agricultural industry, financial institutions and local governmental units.

As a bank executive I managed most facets of a community bank. Prior to retiring my volunteer activities included: Earth City Trustee, St. Louis Equity Fund Finance Committee member and SSM Hospital Advisory Board Member. After retirement, I volunteer at the Sierra Club Lemonade Stand, attend the meetings and I volunteered at the Missouri Botanical Garden and St. Francis Church. In the late 80's I converted seven acres of residential zoned land to conservation and planted over 3,000 tree seedlings. Today the results are a dense wood containing many species of trees. My hobbies include hiking and biking on the Katy Trail, photography, fishing and rebuilding old cars. I believe the future can only be saved by aggressive actions today.

I am a lifelong activist committed to the notion that change does not happen unless ordinary people join together and demand it. Environmentalists have been doing so for decades, and anyone who considers the clean air bill or the spate of regulations implemented by the Obama administration must marvel at what we have accomplished. But because those successes are uniquely imperiled by new leadership in Washington and Jefferson City, the efforts of groups like the Sierra Club have never been more important. I have been a member of the Executive Committee for more than a decade and am currently the chair of the Committee. I am also a Washington University Professor who brings to the Club a dedication to environmentalist ideals, a scientist's measured analysis of issues and, most importantly, an abiding commitment to an effective results-oriented Club that lets no one forget that we did not stand by and watch. As a hiker with a reverence for nature, I have an obligation to Missouri's forests and to our wild and special places. As a citizen, I have been a long-time activist in support of numerous progressive causes. And as a parent, I can do nothing less than fight for the planet I will one day leave behind.

I have been passionate about environmental issues my whole life, and I have truly appreciated the opportunity to become more involved in local and national environmental issues through the Sierra Club. I have been on the EMG Executive Committee for the past three years and worked on numerous Sierra Club initiatives, including serving as the Missouri Delegate to the National Sierra Club's Council of Club Leaders meeting this past September. I currently work for the Open Space Council for the St. Louis Region as their Program Manager, helping implement community field conservation programs. I would love the opportunity to serve another term on the Executive Committee and further connect with Sierra Club members and supporters to work as a team to create real, lasting change in our community. I would look forward to expanding my role in Club democracy efforts. I believe environmental justice education is integral to the success of environmental advocacy and activism in our region and beyond. As a member of the Executive Committee, I would look forward to empowering local constituencies, engaging members in Sierra Club programs to improve the environmental health of our region for all community members.
