Save Lake Tahoe from Aquatic Weeds!

Tahoe Keys housing development

The development of the Tahoe Keys is a case study in how NOT to develop land in a fragile ecosystem on a world-renowned scenic lake.

We need to approach the invasive weeds with respect to this important body of water and using proven scientific methods that will remove the problem without creating another one.

SIERRA CLUB Support for Movement for Black Lives SixNineteen Action

*Note - We have been asked to partner on this movement moment by the Movement For Black Lives, so while this is creating urgency, we want to show up in this important moment.

How we got here: White supremacy is a matter of life and death specifically for Black people and the planet.

The white supremacist, tragic murders of Rayshard Brooks, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and countless others have renewed global demands for justice, and we can’t stand by while our governments continue to fund an excessive, brutal, and discriminatory system of policing with our tax dollars.

As one of the largest climate and environmental justice advocacy organizations, part of the Sierra Club’s mandate is to ensure that oppressed communities receive justice and experience the benefits of a healthy and sustainable future. We can never forget that the roots of the climate crisis lie in racism, land-theft, pillaging, colonialism, and patriarchy. And the pain of these injustices is still felt today - Black people have been disproportionately devastated by COVID-19 and live with disproportionately higher levels of toxic pollution, and face more powerful storms, floods, heat waves, wildfires, and droughts. This powerful piece by Hop Hopkins, our Director of Strategic Partnerships, in Sierra Magazine details the inextricable connection between the climate crisis and white supremacy.

Press Release

100% Clean Energy School Districts Factsheet

Presser Handout

The transportation sector is the largest and fastest-growing source of carbon emissions in the US. In total, the US transportation sector—which includes cars, buses, trucks, planes, trains, ships, and freight—produces nearly 30 percent of all US climate emissions(link is external)—more than any other sector. But this doesn’t have to be the case. The Sierra Club’s Clean Transportation for All campaign is working to ensure that we all benefit from a 21st-century clean transportation system with access to cars, trucks, and buses that rely on little to no oil at all as well as to clean public transit—and other local clean transportation solutions—that centers equity and justice.

NATIONAL MONUMENTS

More Info coming soon

Stand Up for Our National Monuments!

Sierra Club, conservation allies and our tribal partners are rallying in Salt Lake City and across the nation to defend national monuments threatened by the Trump Administration.  On Monday, December 4 in Salt Lake City the President announced his decision to drastically shrink Grand Staircase-Escalante by 45% and Bears Ears National Monuments in Utah by 80%.

Here's a map with these and other events across the country. Remember to check the page as the week goes by; other events are being organized.  Please stand up for our National Monuments...and share widely!   Defend #MonumentsForAll   #StandWithBearsEars   #SaveGrandStaircase

Healing in Nature

DREAMers from the Mother Lode Chapter region went to Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument. READ STORY

DREAMers Go Wild #MonumentsforAll

We came together to live and understand the connectivity of all things in a powerful way. In nature, in our Public Lands, a group of DREAMers gathered to defend our right to the outdoors and take a stand against Sec. Zinke’s recommendation to Trump. This while also enjoying the outdoors and learning to heal from the ongoing trauma our broken immigration system creates for them and in our families and communities.

This federal administration is working to strip essential protections that would eliminate important parts of our national monuments and terrorize immigrant communities with fear of deportation. We all come from the land, and we are here to stay.

We will not leave our communities and our public lands unprotected. The admirable determination our DREAMers have to study and live happy, productive lives and the “objects of scientific and historical interest” our National Monuments have are still there and still deserve to be fully protected for All people living on this land and for future generations.
