Jursidiction

Summary
Compressor stations -- the massive pressurizing facilities that drive gas into pipelines -- can cause major air pollution problems. Escaping gas can contribute to ozone smog issues, or contain other dangerous compounds.
Updates

On August 26, 2010, the Sierra Club, Arkansas for Gas Drilling Accountability, and Citizens Against Resource Exploitation submitted comments on the permit.  They argued that the permit improperly failed to consider all the pollution sources connected with compressors -- including field emissions, fugitive emissions, and emissions from all compressors in one network -- and so didn't impose tough enough pollution controls.  They included an excellent Environmental Defense Fund report by Dr. Al Armendariz, now EPA Region 6 Administrator, on these issues.

In summer 2010, Arkansas issued a draft general permit for gas compressor stations. In December 2010, Arkansas finalized the draft permit.
