Summary
Private owners hold mineral rights beneath many national parks, especially in the Northeast. The Park Service has regulations governing how these private rights may be exercised and wants to strengthen these "9B" rules to help control shale gas extraction.
Updates

On November 25, 2009, the National Park Service proposed revising its 9B rules.

On January 25, 2010, the Sierra Club submitted extensive comments, urging the Park Service to set the gold standard for gas regulation in order to protect the vital public lands it stewards.

In December 2010, the Park Service issued a scoping notice for its Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the revision of its rules, to which the Sierra Club submitted comments.
