The Trip

Enjoy spectacular views of Lake Tahoe, wildflower displays, sparkling lakes,
and massive trees along three of the leader's favorite sections of the Tahoe
Rim Trail. Then, sample two gem hikes in the Donner Summit area close to the
lodge.
Two evenings yoga classes will be offered to stretch out tired muscles and
bring smiles to our faces. Retire in the evening to the comfortable surroundings
of the lodge for delicious food, hot showers, and a hot tub.
Note: This is the plan, but it may change based on weather and snow conditions.
Day 1: Arrive at the lodge in time for dinner. After dinner
we will meet and go over the week's plans.
Day 2: Tahoe Rim Trail-Martis Peak to Rose Knob Peak-- We'll
hike 13 miles and enjoy incredible views of Lake Tahoe. On the way back to
the lodge, we will stop off for a swim in Lake Tahoe.
Day 3: Tahoe Rim Trail-Ward Creek to Twin Peaks--Wildflowers
and Pacific Crest views will be the highlight of this 10-mile section. On
the way home, we will swim in Lake Tahoe. After dinner, we'll have a yoga class.
Day 4: Pacific Crest Trail to Coon Canyon to Basin Peak--
This strenuous 12-mile loop close to the lodge will bring us through the remote
and beautiful Coon Canyon, to the top of a trailless peak, and past the Sierra
Club's Peter Grubb Hut.
Day 5: Tahoe Rim Trail-Desolation Wilderness via Emerald
Bay--Starting at Tahoe's most photographed location we will hike into the PCT
and TRT, walk past Dicks and Fontanillis Lake , follow along the edge of a
cascade, and loop back to Emerald Bay to complete our 10 mile hike. After dinner,
we'll have our second
yoga class.
Day 6: Loch Levon Lakes-- A moderate six-mile hike
to several charming lakes. We can leave for home from the trailhead.
Getting There
Clair Tappaan Lodge is located on Donner Summit , which is about eight miles
west of Truckee and about 40 miles from Reno and the Reno/Tahoe airport. If
you fly
into San Francisco, plan on a three hour drive to the Lodge. Carpooling is
highly recommended. During the trip we will travel to trailheads via a van.
Built by Sierra Club volunteers in 1934, Clair Tappaan Lodge has a special rustic charm with its spacious living room and enormous fireplace, cozy library, and outdoor fire ring. Most sleeping accommodations are dormitory style, but there are several family-style rooms and small cubicles. All of these rooms are furnished with bunk beds, mattresses, and pillows. Guests should bring their own sleeping bag or sheets. There are two men's and two women's bathrooms and a hot tub. Coin-operated washers and dryers are available. No smoking is allowed either in the building or on the surrounding trails.
A professional chef prepares hearty breakfasts and dinners. Meals are served in the lodge's large dining room. A vegetarian meal option is always available. Participants with other dietary restrictions can usually be accommodated, provided the trip leader is informed in advance. Brown bag lunch provisions are available each day for guests.
Hike lengths range from 6 to 13 miles.
All of the hikes have fairly substantial climbs of between 1,000 and 2,000
feet. The highest elevation reached will be over 9,000 feet. Due to the trailhead's
distance from the lodge and meal time requirements we will need to hike a fairly
brisk pace, but time will be set aside for swimming and eating.
No special equipment is required. Leader will send out a list of suggestions before the trip. If you have a yoga mat, it would be worthwhile to bring it.
