The Trip

Thanksgiving Week signals the start of our Winter Holiday season, with commercialism ramping up to high gear. Our week on Kauai is designed to give us some time to alternately rest and then be active. We will prepare for the busy season ahead. The activities for the week are with a novice athlete in mind. The hardest day will be a hike of around 5 miles with continuous climbs and descents.

Itinerary

Day 1: We meet between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. at the Lihue airport on Kauai, Hawaii. We will be transported to our cabins for the week, in a central, southern spot on Kauai

Day 2:  We're off to a kayak outing to a local waterfall, with history of the area from a local guide.

Day 3: We will drive to the highlands for a hike in a very different setting.

Day 4: Time for a surf lesson! We will take turns with our lessons, and everyone should be able to stand (although perhaps briefly!) This might end up as a great photo for your holiday cards.

Day 5: We will do a hike on a southern shore before returning to the cabins for a Thanksgiving dinner unlike our normal Thanksgiving dinner.

Day 6: Today's a beach day with an opportunity to swim, snorkel, or sleep. Perhaps you'll want to rent a surfboard for another day standing on the waves.

Day 7: We pack and leave for the airport after breakfast.

Note: We will likely have to sign additional waivers for the rental companies when we use the snorkel gear, kayaks, and surf boards.

Getting There

The trip begins at the Lihue Airport , so you will be responsible for your flight to Hawaii and return. Plan on arriving on the afternoon of November 22 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Note that the trip price does not include transportation to Hawaii.

You will arrive back at the Lihue Airport on Saturday, November 28, by 10 a.m.  Allowing for a two hour security window, your flight out should be booked for noon or later.  Wait until you have a leader approval for your participation before you book non-refundable tickets!

Accommodations and Food

We will be staying in clean and simple one room cabins, with toilet and showers outside in another building. The cabins are complete with bedding and shower towels, so you will not have to bring your sleeping bag. We will attempt to divide the group into the cabins based on single men, single women and couples, but this is a move that will occur as the signups for the trip come in. In any case, don't expect the Ritz!

Our food will be familiar but with a different twist, reflecting the islands' various ethnic roots. Vegetarians are able to be accommodated. If you have dietary needs, contact the cook or leader ASAP.

Trip Difficulty

You need a moderate level of fitness and flexibility for the trip. The activities are geared for a novice, but the hikes are about 5 miles in length and one involves continuous ups and downs.

Equipment and Clothing

You will need to bring or rent snorkel equipment. Weekly rentals on Kauai cost about $25 for mask, snorkel and fins.  Sturdy footwear for the hikes will be needed. More information on this will follow. If you enjoy using trekking poles, you might want to bring them.

References

Reading material will be sent out in the months prior to the trip.

Conservation

An island has issues of its own, in addition to issues we are already familiar with. We will discuss these issues as we observe them, and will hike in an area saved due in large part by actions of the local Sierra Club chapter.

Trip Price

See the How to Apply for an Outing section for more details on registering for this trip and details about our Reservation and Cancellation Policy.

The payment of a deposit does not confirm you as a member on the trip. Participants must be approved by the trip leader. After signing up for this trip, you will be sent a confirmation packet containing approval materials (Participant Approval Questionnaire, Medical Form, Liability Release Form). Each applicant (including those on the waitlist) must fill out these forms and promptly mail them to the trip leader. The leader will review the approval materials and notify you of your acceptance in a timely manner.

Jill McIntire Jill McIntire lives in Berkeley, California, and has led trips on the main Hawaiian Islands and on Midway. She first went to Hawaii on a Sierra Club bicycling trip; since then, she's cycled, kayaked, and hiked the islands.
