What is Inner City Outings? Inner
City Outings (ICO) is a program that introduces people to the
wilderness. ICO volunteers donate time to community agencies that
want to provide outings programs for members. Agencies may include
schools, church and neighborhood youth groups, rehabilitation centers,
and outdoor clubs. ICO provides the equipment necessary to conduct
safe wilderness experiences: day packs, backpacks, water bottles,
cooking gear, sleeping bags, water purifiers, and first-aid kits.
Most ICO groups offer outings free of charge. Outings may include
day hikes, backpacking, car camping, canoeing, white-water rafting,
bicycling, or cross-country skiing.
Because more and more outings are conducted each year, it is critical
that ICO develop greater resources to replace worn outdoor equipment
and recruit and train new volunteer leaders. The greatest challenge
facing ICO today is keeping up with the rapidly increasing demand
for outings from community groups in cities across the United States.
