This is an Outings Leader Training workshop offered by the Outdoor Activities Training Program (OATP).
This workshop fulfills the OLT 101/OLT 201 requirement.
Location:
Elks Camp Barrett in Crownsville, MD (near Annapolis).
Starts: Friday, October 10.
Check-in and dinner are from 6 p.m. onward. Opening
program is at 7:30 p.m. sharp
Ends:
Sunday, October 12, with lunch (around 12 p.m.)
Cost:
$45 -- Includes meals (Fri. dinner - Sun. lunch) and bunk-style cabin lodging for Fri-Sat.

After you've registered
You will be asked to fill out an
on-line
questionnaire (or request a hard copy be sent to you).

You will be sent a confirmation letter and workshop
overview packet immediately after registering.
- If you haven’t already taken Outings Leader Training – Basic (OLT
101), you should take this prior to this training event. Your weekend
training experience will benefit greatly from it, especially if you are
a new leader. You can take this
course in several different formats on the Sierra Club's
password-protected website. If you don't already have a login/password,
you can simply request one.

Approximately ten days
prior to the workshop you will be sent final details including
driving directions, a ride share list, and a packing list.
Facility Information
Elks Camp Barrett is located in
Crownsville, Maryland (west of Annapolis), 30 miles south of Baltimore
and 30 miles east of Washington D.C. It is situated on approximately 188
acres. There are 6 cabins, a large dining hall with Director's Office,
two pavilions and the Resident Maintenance Manager/Custodian's house on
the premises.
- Sleeping accommodations will be in
cabins that sleep 20 each. Each cabin has a toilet and sink. Shower
facilities are located in a central bathhouse.
- Cabins will be designated as male,
female, or mixed gender.
- The cabins have electricity, but are
not winterized.
- For a heartier experience, you may
choose to pitch a tent on the grounds.
- Showers are located in a central
bathhouse. Additional toilets are in the dining hall.
What to Bring

Sleeping bag or linens and a pillow if you would like (no
linens are provided).

Sunscreen and a hat.

Raingear - one workshop session will be held outside
regardless of weather

Camp chair or lawn chair -- You'll be much more comfortable
if you provide your own seating for the sessions. Otherwise expect to sit on
standard "camp" chairs

Cup or insulated mug for hot drinks and a water bottle

Flashlight or headlamp

Watch or alarm clock for waking up and keeping to the
schedule

Writing utensils - you will be provided with a workshop
binder

Appropriate clothing for the weather. Please check the
current weather prior to the workshop

Personal toiletries, towel, and shower shoes

Cash or checks - We will be selling the book Outdoor
Leadership for $10, Outings Banners for $30, and other gear and related
items

If you have any outings leader related materials to give out
or display on either our Resource Table or Reference Table, please bring
them.

The camp is located off of Chesterfield Road in Crownsville, MD.
From Washington and Virginia
- Take Interstate Route 50 east off I-95 (about the 2 o'clock position on
the beltway)
- Drive east, and take the exit for MD Route 3 North.
- Drive about 1 mile north and turn right onto MD Route 450 (Defense
Highway)
- Drive 3.5 miles east and turn left on St. Stevens Church Road. (this is
a T-intersection. Rut-land Rd. will intersect on the right 100 ft. further
east)
- Drive 1/2 mile north and turn right on Chesterfield Rd. (There will be a
sign to Camp Barrett)
- Drive 1/2 mile to main gate entrance for camp. Will be at the peak of
the hill on the right.
From Charles and Prince George Counties, MD
- Take MD Route 31 north (from places like Waldorf).
- Take the exit for MD Route 3 North (which is straight ahead)
- Drive about 1 mile north and turn right onto MD Route 450 (Defense
Highway)
- Drive 3.5 miles east and turn left on St. Stevens Church Road. (this is
a T-intersection. Rut-land Rd. will intersect on the right 100 ft. further
east)
- Drive 1/2 mile north and turn right on Chesterfield Rd. (There will be a
sign to Camp Barrett)
- Drive 1/2 mile to main gate entrance for camp. Will be at the peak of
the hill on the right.
From Calvert and St. Mary's Counties, MD
- Take MD Route 4 past Prince Frederick.
- Exit right and take Route 2 north towards Annapolis
- Take a left onto MD Route 242, Birdsville Road (about 2 miles before the
commercial area starts on Route 2 after it intersects with Route 214.)
- About 10 miles north turn right onto MD Route 450 (Defense Highway)
- Drive 3.5 miles east and turn left on St. Stevens Church Road. (this is
a T-intersection. Rut-land Rd. will intersect on the right 100 ft. further
east)
- Drive 1/2 mile north and turn right on Chesterfield Rd. (There will be a
sign to Camp Barrett)
- Drive 1/2 mile to main gate entrance for camp. Will be at the peak of
the hill on the right.
From Baltimore and Areas North
- Take Interstate Route 97 south towards Annapolis.
- Take exit 5 for Crownsville. This exit will put you on Route 178
Generals Highway south.
- Turn right at 3rd traffic light for Crownsville Rd.
- About 1 mile down the road, turn right onto Hawkins Rd.
- Look for Elks Camp Barrett sign on pine tree as you approach hill.
- Go over hill to bottom
- Slow down and prepare to stop at bottom of hill.
- The camp gates will be straight ahead.
