The Sierra Club and Our National Parks
Everglades National Park, Florida

Great Egret, Everglades National Park
The Everglades, with over a million acres of protected area, is a jewel of our national parks system. With alligators, mangrove and cypress trees, American crocodiles, and the endangered Florida Panther and Indian Manatee, the Everglades is a haven for many species and an area that must be protected as part of our natural heritage for future generations. But global warming threatens the Everglades with sea level rise and drought, and we must take action now before it is too late.
Over the years, the Sierra Club has played a major role in protecting the Everglades and making sure that we preserve it for future generations. We campaigned to keep an international airport with 236,000 flights a year from being built near Everglades National Park and nearby Biscyane National Park. The Sierra Club is now working to secure sugar lands to provide fresh water for the Everglades, elevate a road that blocks that flow, and protect the Florida Panther in nearby Big Cypress National Preserve.
