The Sierra Club and Our National Parks
Glacier National Park, Montana

Wild Goose Island, Saint Mary Lake, Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park, with over three million acres of protected area, is a jewel of our national parks system. With Apgar Village, Lake McDonald and Logan Pass, Grizzly Bears, Wolverines, Grey Wolf and Lynx; Harlequin Ducks, and bald eagle, Glacier is a haven for many species and an area that must be protected as part of our natural heritage for future generations. But there are two major threats to the park, global warming as well as coal and methane exploration.
Many scientists predict that the park will have no glaciers by 2030. On top of global warming, coal and coal bed methane exploration in Canada threaten the park as well. Right in the heart of the headwaters of the Flathead River which creates the western boundary to Glacier Park, there are coal bed methane and coal mines proposed.
Over the years, the Sierra Club has played a major role in protecting Glacier and making sure that we preserve it for future generations. We have helped encourage Senators Baucus and Tester to halt the coal mine proposals.
