The Sierra Club and Our National Parks
Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Sunset at Grand Canyon National Park
The Grand Canyon, with over a million acres of protected area, is a jewel of our national parks system. With elk, bighorn sheep, endangered California condors, bald eagles, deer, desert tortoises, and many other species, the Grand Canyon is an area that must be protected as part of our natural heritage for future generations. But the uranium mining that is being proposed near the park threatens this area, and we must take action now before it is too late.
Over the years, the Sierra Club has played a major role in protecting the Grand Canyon and making sure that we preserve it for future generations. We campaigned to stop dam construction in the Grand Canyon, helped to prevent development in and around the park and on national forest land, encouraged President Clinton to establish and expand the Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, and helped to stop logging and timber sales just outside the park. The Sierra Club is now working to stop uranium mining in the area.
