The Sierra Club and Our National Parks
North Cascades National Park, Washington

Mt Shuksan, North Cascades National Park
North Cascades National Park, with nearly 700,000 acres of protected area, is a jewel of our national parks system. With Ross Lake, Lake Chelan, Mount Shuksan, Pickett Range, Grizzly Bears, Cougars and Spotted Owl, North Cascades is a haven for many species and an area that must be protected as part of our natural heritage for future generations. But road blowouts caused by river flooding threaten the integrity of this beautiful place. We must take action now before it is too late.
Over the years, the Sierra Club has played a major role in protecting North Cascades and making sure that we preserve it for future generations. The Sierra Club is actively opposing the Parks Service's efforts to rebuild Stehekin Road, one of the park's main access points that continually gets blown out by river flooding. Moreover, in the 1960s, the Sierra Club had 5 goals for North Cascades, one of which was to create North Cascades National Park, and with the help and influence of David Brower, they succeeded.
