The Sierra Club and Our National Parks
Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park
Yosemite National Park, with almost 750,000 acres of protected area and home to the tallest waterfall in the United States, is a jewel of our national parks system. With Yosemite Falls, Half Dome, Mt. Lyell, Black Bears, Sierra Nevada Red Fox and Sierra Nevada Big Horn Sheep, Yosemite is an area that must be protected as part of our natural heritage for future generations. But overcrowding, lack of funding threaten this area, and we must take action now before it is too late.
Over the years, the Sierra Club has played a major role in protecting Yosemite and making sure that we preserve it for future generations. The Sierra Club and John Muir in particular were instrumental in designating Yosemite as a National Park. In 1980, the Sierra Club alongside others pushed for and ultimately created the Yosemite General Management Plan whose goal is to reverse the impact of 4.1 million yearly visitors and their vehicles through implementing electric shuttle buses, rail systems and electric monorails operating quietly and cleanly within Yosemite.
