The Sierra Club and Our National Parks

Zion National Park, Utah

Zion Valley, Zion National Park

Zion National Park, with nearly 150,000 acres of protected area, is a jewel of our national parks system. With Zion Canyon, Koblob Canyons, Virgin River and an amazing mix of forest and desert, Zion is a haven for many species and an area that must be protected as part of our natural heritage for future generations. But thirty years of rapid and unplanned growth in Washington County has ballooned formerly small towns like Hurricane, Utah, into major population centers. Zion now has to contend with problems attendant on being on the doorstep of urban areas: air pollution, aircraft over flights, increasing visitation and encroaching residential development. We must take action now before it is too late.

Over the years, the Sierra Club has played a major role in protecting Zion and making sure that we preserve it for future generations. The Sierra Club continues to urge residents of the Southwest to conserve water at home and work so groundwater and streams flowing into the Colorado River, the biggest source of water in the region, can continue to be available for plants and animals.
