RENEWAL
RENEWAL (2008) is the first feature-length documentary to capture the breadth and vitality of America's religious-environmental movement. In rural communities, suburbs and cities, people of faith are rolling up their sleeves in practical and far-reaching ways. The ninety-minute documentary is comprised of eight separate short stories. Each story is ideally suited for community screenings, classrooms and discussion:
- A Crime Against Creation - Evangelicals bear witness to mountaintop removal and the destruction of Appalachia
- Going Green - GreenFaith helps congregations take the first steps to environmental action
- Food for Faith - Muslim tradition and charity forge bonds between urban communities and sustainable farms
- Ancient Roots - Teva Learning Center and Adamah bring environmental education together with Jewish tradition
- Compassion in Action - Green Sangha, a Buddhist community, leads a campaign to save trees
- Eco-Justice - The Holy Spirit inspires a battle against industrial contamination in small town Mississippi
- Sacred Celebration - Catholics and Native Americans embrace religious ritual to protect land and water
- Interfaith Power and Light - Across America people of all faiths mount a religious response to global warming
RENEWAL was produced and directed by veteran filmmakers Marty Ostrow and Terry Kay Rockefeller, using the compelling storytelling and high production standards that have been the hallmark of their work for NOVA, American Experience, Eyes on the Prize, and other television series.
Recently RENEWAL was voted “Best of Fest” at the Hazel Wolf Environmental Film Festival in Seattle, WA. On June 5, 2008 the United Nations’ Environment Programme's Interfaith Partnership for the Environment sponsored a screening of RENEWAL at the United Nations in New York. “The religious-environmental movement is potentially key to dealing with the greatest problem humans have ever faced, and it has never been captured with more breadth and force than in RENEWAL. I hope this movie is screened in church basements and synagogue halls across the country, and that it moves many more people of faith off the fence and into action.” – Bill McKibben,
Environmentalist & author of
