Helping Pro-Environment Candidates Win

In addition to contributing directly to these champions, how can Sierra Club activists help elect pro-environment candidates? The following tips can help build media, money and momentum for a campaign:

  • Hold a small donor fund-raising event at someone's house (100 guests donating $25 each will raise $2,500).
  • Hold a press conference to announce your endorsement of a particular candidate.
  • Write letters-to-the-editor of local papers about why people should vote for your endorsee, or against his/her opponent.
  • Call in to local radio talk shows to talk about your candidate.
  • Organize volunteers to phone Club members to remind them to vote and tell them about endorsement decision and candidates' environmental records.
  • Watch the opposition to make sure they don't claim to be pro- environment when they are not, and be prepared to hold candidates accountable to their records.
