The Planet

What You Can Do

The Planet, June 1997, Volume 4, number 5

To take action:

  • Write U.S. Forest Service Chief Mike Dombeck and urge him to protect what's left of our forests, wilderness and wildlife habitat and reform the agency by putting public interests before special interests. Write: Mike Dombeck, Chief, U.S. Forest Service, P.O. Box 96090, Washington, DC 20090-6090.
  • Tell your representative to support a Porter-Kennedy amendment to the 1998 Interior appropriations bill that would end subsidies for forest timber roads. Write: U.S. House of Representatives, Washington, DC 20515.
  • Contact your senators and tell them to oppose Sen. Craig's proposed bill, which would weaken laws governing forest management. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper with the message that our national forests belong to all Americans, and Sen. Craig's proposed legislation is nothing short of a timber industry wish list to turn our forests into their tree farms. Write: U.S. Senate, Washington, DC 20510.
  • Urge your representative to oppose Rep. Herger's "forest health" bill, H.R. 858, which would override environmental law and existing management plans to massively increase logging in the Sierra Nevada. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper with the same message.
  • Urge your representative to cosponsor Rep. Cynthia McKinney's (D-Ga.) bill barring commercial logging on national forest lands.
  • Help revise your local forest management plan. Contact your Sierra Club chapter or regional office for more information.
