Answers:

1. (b) - Throughout history, shifts in temperature have occurred at a rate of a few degrees over thousands of years. Considering that temperatures in some regions of the world have risen by 5 degrees Fahrenheit over only a century, we need to stem the tide of man-made global warming.

2. (c) - Biologists cite the four dams located on the Lower Snake River, along with the four lower Columbia River dams, as the cause of at least 80 percent of human-inflicted Snake Basin salmon mortalities. Concrete dams, grinding turbines and slackwater reservoirs are pushing the world's salmon stocks toward extinction.

3. (b) - According to the General Accounting Office, from 1992-1997 the U.S. Forest Service's logging program lost $2 billion. The GAO concluded that the program is "largely driven by commercial rather than safety considerations," often selecting the largest, commercially valuable trees. Cutting larger trees reduces shade, creates hotter and drier conditions and leaves behind flammable "slash debris."

4. (c)

5. False

6. (d)

7. (a) - Wiggling through a loophole designating SUVs as "light trucks," SUVs are guzzling twice as much gas and spewing out 47 percent more air pollution than the average American car. More startling is the fact that the technology exists to make SUVs as fuel-efficient as today's compact car!

8 (c)

9. (c)

10. (a)

11. (b)
