Playing Well with Others Now Earns Prize

Sierra Club activists have been known to mix it up with some interesting partners: surfers, National Rifle Association members, rock stars. Team-building is important - and now it's worthy of an award.

The Environmental Alliance Award has been added to the roster of honors that will be presented to Sierra Club volunteers at the annual meeting in San Francisco on Sept. 15. The new award will be given to an activist who has helped further environmental goals by teaming up with a non-Sierra Club constituency.

"This is an important and emerging area of emphasis for us," said Club President Robbie Cox. The Joseph Barbosa Earth Fund will contribute $500 to support the work of the volunteer winner or winners.

But first the award-worthy in all categories must be nominated - by the June 1 deadline.

Newer categories include the One Club Award for effectively combining outings with conservation; the Electronic Communication Award for the best Web page or other use of technological media; and the Joseph Barbosa Earth Fund Award, which recognizes Club members under the age of 30 who have demonstrated an outstanding record of service to the environment. The latter award comes with a prize of $2,000 to support the winner's work.

There are also traditional awards for special achievements, newsletters, photography, leadership, long-time contributions and more.

See the list of awards and nomination forms. For more information, contact Honors and Awards Committee Chair Ellen Mayou at (817) 283-5489; mayou@flash.net.
