Protect and Celebrate
On Earth Day and throughout the spring, Sierra Club activists organized events from coast to coast to promote local and national environmental issues. Here is a random sampling:
The identity of Metro Woman, at right, is a secret, but she's known to show up at transit stations in the Washington D.C., area, handing out literature in support of the proposed Purple Line, which the Sierra Club's Maryland, Virginia, and D.C. chapters have been championing for years. The Purple Line would link existing Metro lines and help spur development around transit systems instead of the surrounding countryside.
In Concord, New Hampshire, below, Sierra Club members displayed 35,000 paper dolls representing the 35,000 New Hampshire children diagnosed with asthma, calling attention to the Granite State's poor air quality.
In New York City, more than 100 volunteers took part in a cleanup of a heavily trashed salt marsh on Jamaica Bay in Queens, led by retired national parks ranger and New York City Group activist Don Riepe.
Other events included a tree planting in Boise, Idaho; a landfill tour in Providence, Rhode Island; the launch of a "Green Cities" campaign in Tampa, Florida; an outing to Alaska's Chugach National Forest and a "Trash Off the Tracks" cleanup event in Atlanta.
