President Obama’s U.S. EPA finalized a historic precedent for limits on carbon pollution for existing power plants in August 2015 with the Clean Power Plan. This historic step by the EPA to reduce carbon pollution from nation's electric sector is the greatest such step the country has taken so far moving away from climate disruption and towards clean energy.

States will need to submit initial plans to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency by September 2016. Illinois Governor Rauner's Administration must prepare to meet the Clean Power Plan goals for the state. Illinois set clean energy targets in 2007, avoiding more than 5 million tons of air pollution. The most recent American Lung Association State of the Air Report found that more than 6.7 million Illinoisans breathe unhealthy air due to pollution.
