Steve Pearce has represented New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District for three terms. He states support for "protecting and preserving our strong heritage of open wilderness" and for "renewable and alternative forms of energy," but he also expresses support for increased use of oil and coal. He did recently introduce the Zeroing In America Energy Act to use wide swaths of federal land in the American West to develop solar energy but Pearce's overall voting record reveals his true stance on environmental issues.
His lifetime League of Conservation Voters rating is 1%, and this rating includes 0% scores for the two most recent sessions of Congress. He has voted against the repeal of oil subsidies, against a renewable energy standard, , and better fuel economy standards as well as measures to fight , global warming, air and water pollution. Pearce has consistently voted with polluting industries and against the best interests of the people of New Mexico, unlike Tom Udall.
Udall voted for the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act of 2008, and Pearce voted against it. New Mexico stands to greatly benefit from a forward-thinking clean energy future based on more renewable energy. With lots of sun and wind, no states would fare better than New Mexico from a clean energy economy, yet Steve Pearce has sided with outdated fossil fuels instead. Not only is Pearce bad for New Mexico, but his anti-environmental policies are a serious threat to the economic future of America. In November, vote for Tom Udall.
