Good Guys & Bad Guys

Former Governor Jeanne Shaheen (New Hampshire)

"Nowhere is investment more urgently needed than in the development of new energy technologies. It is clearly an economic imperative, but it is also a national security imperative - we must end our dependence on foreign oil - and an environmental imperative - we must reverse global warming." --Jeanne Shaheen, July 8, 2008

As Governor, Jeanne Shaheen made New Hampshire a leader in clean energy and environmental progress. As a Senator, she intends to bring these same kinds of policies to a national stage. During her time as Governor, from 1997-2003, Shaheen set a new energy course for New Hampshire by developing the state's first comprehensive energy plan, moving New Hampshire toward more renewable energy, increased energy efficiency, and cleaner energy sources. She brought Republicans and Democrats together to pass the Clean Power Act, making New Hampshire the first state in the nation to enact a law requiring power plants to reduce emissions of four pollutants: carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and mercury. Her State Building Energy Conservation Initiative improved energy efficiency in state buildings, reducing carbon emissions and saving the state several million dollars a year in energy costs. Energy efficiency programs initiated by the Shaheen administration have saved New Hampshire families and businesses almost $400 million and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by millions of tons.

Shaheen opposes tax breaks for the oil and gas companies that are already raking in record profits. She supports investments in alternative energy, including cellulosic ethanol, and energy efficiency, - investments that will lead to new jobs. Shaheen favors a variety of policies aimed at cutting carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050. For example, she supports a modern electric transmission system and tax credits for energy efficient building. Shaheen also intents to pursue energy independence and economic development in environmentally sound ways, as she did as Governor. With proven leadership at the state level already, Shaheen can be trusted to take action for a clean energy economy that creats jobs while meeting our energy needs.
