State of the Union Address, 2006

Admit it: We don't expect much talk about the environment from President Bush when he gives his State of the Union Address on Tuesday, January 31. Still, so many important environmental issues face our nation that we can never quite bring ourselves to believe he'll ignore them all. Then, like Lucy in Peanuts, he yank away the football at the last minute every year. Nevertheless, we'll be watching, and hoping, to hear something about the environment.

So, in a spirit of optimism: Which of the following seven environmental issues would you most like to hear our President mention in his State of the Union speech?

Global warming and greenhouse gas emissions.

Mercury pollution from coal-fired power plants

Oil dependency and alternative-energy development (nuclear power plants don't count)

The state of our national parks and other public lands

Wetlands loss in southern Louisiana

Critical habitat for endangered species

Fuel mileage standards for cars and trucks
