Global Population & the Environment E-Newsletter

PopNews March 2005 -- Celebrating Women and the Environment

During the month of April, Earth Day events and celebrations will take place all over the country and around the world. Make population a part of your Earth Day outreach! Earth Day (April 22) is an opportunity to highlight the link between women's health and the Earth's health, to focus attention on the impact population growth has on the global environment and to find out how we can address this issue. Now is the time to organize and get out into our communities. If you are interested in doing an Earth Day event or need population materials for your tabling and outreach efforts, please contact us! Call Cristina Mestre at 202.548.4599 or email her at cristina.mestre@sierraclub.org.

Recommended Resource:
There is a direct connection among gender, population, development and the environment. Women make up over half of the world's population and are among the first to suffer from the impacts of environmental degradation. The United Nations Environment Program has put together a new resource that gives a gender perspective on environmental preservation and shows that there is a need for women to play a more significant role in creating environmental policy. "Women and the Environment" highlights the many roles that women play and stresses the importance of looking at sustainable development with a more comprehensive gender approach.
