PopNews: Take Action and Support the Global Democracy Promotion Act!

Only two days after his inauguration in 2001, President Bush signed an executive order to reinstate the Global Gag Rule -- a harmful policy that limits U.S. support for overseas family planning programs. Despite Congress’s best efforts to overturn this policy, it remains intact.

This week, the Sierra Club joins the efforts of concerned citizens and activists from across the country who will be contacting their Representatives, urging them to support the Global Democracy Promotion Act (H.R. 4465) and co-sponsor this newly introduced legislation that would repeal the Global Gag Rule.

We need your help! The health of the planet is connected to the health of women and their families. Family planning improves the ability of families to manage their lives and their natural resources in a more sustainable way. The Sierra Club supports voluntary, unrestricted family planning programs that empower women to make choices about their families and that take steps in the direction of global environmental sustainability. The Club does not support the anti-democratic, anti-family planning policy of the Global Gag Rule.

Call the Capitol switchboard at 1-866-340-9281 and ask to be connected to your Representative's office. If your Representative is listed as a current co-sponsor, please thank them for supporting the Global Democracy Promotion Act. If they are not listed, please call and urge them to co-sponsor the bill. Don't know who your Representative is? Find out at www.house.gov.
