Global Population & the Environment

The Global Population and Environment Program's mission is to protect the global environment and preserve natural resources for future generations by advancing global reproductive health and sustainable development initiatives.

Working with domestic and international coalition partners, we seek to increase universal access to voluntary family planning services and comprehensive sex education; advance women's and girls' basic rights, including access to health care, education and economic opportunity; promote youth leadership; and raise public awareness of wasteful resource consumption in the context of social and economic equity. Feature: Get Involved with our Western Regional Population Justice and Environment Events!

For Earth Day activities April 19-30, the Sierra Club joined international environmental leader Alberto Lopez Castro from Mexico for a West Coast Population, Justice and Environment Tour! We traveled throughout California, Oregon and Washington, giving interactive workshops on the global-to-local connections among sexual and reproductive health and rights, sustainable development and environmental protection. The tour was co-sponsored by national organizations including Public Health Institute, Feminist Majority Foundation, Advocates for Youth, and Campus Progress.

Following the tour, youth and adult activists in California, Oregon, Washington and Nevada are invited to attend our Green-Pink Western Regional Leadership Training, taking place in Los Angeles, CA, June 18-20, 2009, co-organized by Feminist Majority Foundation and Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles. The training will provide participants with all of the information and skills to be an effective leader for sexual and reproductive health and rights and environment issues on campuses and in communities. Travel scholarships will be available, and we will provide for lodging and food expenses for participants who don’t live in the Los Angeles area. In addition to the training, there will be several fun outings throughout the weekend. Please email the application and any questions to population@sierraclub.org!

Feature: Restored Hope for Women, Families and the Environment

Mother and small childOn January 23rd, 2009, President Barack Obama took a major step forward in ensuring the health and well-being of women, families and the environment by repealing the Global Gag Rule. The President also announced his intention to release Congressionally-approved funding to UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, as soon as it is made available. U.S. support of UNFPA, the largest multilateral source of international family planning assistance, has been withheld for the past seven years. During that time, the Fund has not received a total of $244 million in U.S. funding. Read more.
