Support The International Bill Of Rights For Women

The U.S. Senate has the opportunity and responsibilty to approve an international treaty aimed at improving the lives of women around the world and the environment. I strongly urge Senators to ratify the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). This "International Bill of Rights" for women is already helping women around the world. Thanks to CEDAW, women in Tanzania are closer to having the right to inherit land and domestic violence is now a crime in Columbia.

Advancing women’s rights and achieving a better environmental future are closely linked. When women are treated equally and fairly, have the right to own land and are legally protected from violence, they are better able to participate in their communities and in critical decision-making about natural resources. When women have access to basic healthcare and education, population growth rates slow and families and the environment tend to be healthier.

Ratification of CEDAW will not require a single change in U.S. law. But, it will improve the lives of millions of women around the world who cannot legally own land and who do not have the right to an equal education or healthcare - - and ultimately help protect the global environment for our families and our shared future.
