Healthy Communities, an Investment for the Future

While the Bush administration focuses on country building and creating a safer and more democratic world, it closes its eyes to the fact that stable governments and regions are dependent upon healthy communities, ones where the basic needs of people are met- this includes the needs of women, half of the world's population. The administration claims to be committed to improving the lives and status of women, yet their actions tell a different story. During the past four years, they have refused to fund programs that provide women and families with access to life saving healthcare services.

According to the United Nations Population Fund, the administration's decision to cut all US support could lead to the deaths of 4,700 mothers and 77,000 children under the age of five. In addition to saving lives, UNFPA's family planning programs give women choices about the size and spacing of their families, ultimately easing the strains placed on the environment by the world's growing population.

The Bush administration has thwarted one of the organizations leading the way to promote voluntary family planning and women's advancement in over 140 countries. Now is not the time for the US to turn its back on UNFPA programs that improve the health of families, the global environment and women around the world.
