Population, Health and Environment (PHE) Projects acknowledge and address the complex connections between humans, their health, and their environment. They assume that programming based on synergies between health, family planning, and the environment will yield better results in terms of efficiency and sustainability, than will similar programs pursued separately.
Implemented by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), these projects may include a wide variety of interventions, depending on community needs and local capacity. Some examples include:
- community-based distribution of family planning commodities,
- sustainable agriculture for improved child nutrition and food security,
- reduction of indoor air pollution and logging through promotion of fuel-efficient stoves,
- community credit groups or community health insurance schemes,
- improved access to safe water for household use,
- improved access to appropriate latrines and promotion of other hygiene behaviors
Since 2003, the Sierra Club's Global Population and Environment Program has conducted international study tours to visit and learn from integrated Population, Health and Environment (PHE) programs in the field. These trips provide population activists with the opportunity to see first hand the connections among population growth, environmental conservation and access to voluntary family planning services.
Read more about how two Sierra Club volunteers visited PHE Projects in Madagascar and the Philippines, and upon their return, were inspired to become pro-active messengers in their communities in support of international family planning and sustainable development policies!
