Let's Get Active!
Activists in Action
In 2005 we are highlighting population activists from around the country who are taking action in their communities. Listen to their stories and find out more about why they became involved with Sierra Club's Global Population and Environment Program.
Cecilia Height, Winter Park Florida
I am a Registered Nurse as well as a Pediatric and Adult Hospice Nurse. I am passionate about population issues and work very hard to see that the Bush administration stop withholding funding from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). I am a staunch advocate for access to contraception and birth control measures, in large part, to prevent unwanted pregnancies and unwanted abortions. To prevent abortions is to prevent unplanned pregnancies. In my humble opinion, the vast majority of the world's ecological problems are the result of too many people jeopardizing the carrying capacity of our planet. So many children enter the world in an impoverished condition and so many die because of the lack of adequate health care, clean water and adequate nutrition. This needs to be addressed nationally and globally. If any one cares about the future of children and our world, one MUST be willing to address population and the carrying capacity issue.

Helping families to plan for the size of their families will ripple across the globe so that we can have a sustainable world and a healthy population. In conjunction with other organizations, the Sierra Club's Global Population and Environment Program is a huge step in the right direction in order to combat the rollback of the Bush administration's reduction of vital population/family planning programs.
I am active in fighting against mercury poisoning as well as advocating for marine mammals, endangered species, lake and river health, organic gardening and green politics. I am the Group Chair of the Central Florida Group, representing the Central Florida Group as the Delegate to the Florida Chapter of the Sierra Club, Political Chair for the Central Florida Group and Population Chair for the Central Florida Group. I am also on the Florida Chapter Awards Committee and serve as the Lake Jesup Issue Chair.
Lake Jesup is the largest lake in Seminole County and one of the most polluted in Florida due to pollution and alteration of its natural flow by the Army Corps of Engineers in the early 1900's, before they knew the consequences of altering the natural flow of water bodies. The Seminole County Expressway Authority compounded the problems with Lake Jesup by putting a poorly designed causeway across the lake that further impeded its flow while increasing pollution levels. We are trying to reverse the damage and improve Lake Jesup to its optimal condition. I have been active representing Sierra Club on this issue for over 10 years.
