Let's Get Active!
Activists in Action
In 2005 we will be highlighting population activists from around the country who are taking action in their communities. Listen to their stories and find out more about how they became involved with Sierra Club's Global Population and Environment Program.
Cindy Salopek, Chicago, IL
I have worked in the wildlife conservation field for over 10 years, and have always felt strongly about human rights issues and how they are related to a healthy and sustainable environment, in particular, women's rights issues. In 2001, I started working part-time for both the Sierra Club, the Illinois Chapter and SOS Rhino. I was fortunate to find two respected organizations that work on conservation issues - one local, and the other international. I was also very pleased to find that Sierra Club National had expanded their efforts to include international programs. One of their international programs - the Global Population and Environment Program (GPEP) - immediately caught my attention, and the more I learned about the GPEP, the more I came to realize the connection between healthy families and a healthy environment.
I attended my first National Population Activist Training in 2002, where I met program staff who really know how to "make the population-environment connection!" The information I took in that weekend was extremely interesting, and provided me with the tools I needed to connect the issues that I work on in my professional life with my interests in human rights and women's empowerment. I have attended the Training every year since.
As part of my work with SOS Rhino, I attend international conferences, where I spend time tabling and networking with colleagues from conservation, research, and animal management departments of zoos located around the world. I feel that it's important to raise awareness of population-environment issues to professionals in the field, as they in turn can reach a larger audience. In 2003, I attended an international conference on zookeeping and while there tabled and did a poster presentation about population and environment issues. I also recently presented at a local zoo's "bowling for rhinos" event.
Sierra Club's Global Population and Environment Program has given me the opportunity to educate others, build collaborations and relationships with like-minded organizations and contribute to the key human rights issue that are connected to saving the environment.
