Youth Action for the Global Environment California Tour
Sierra Club's Global Population and Environment Program recently toured universities in California, to mobilize action for increased access to global reproductive health services and environmental protection. One featured speaker was Edna Cano, a Belizean teacher and former fellow with International Health Program's Youth Leadership in Sexuality Education Program, GoJoven! She discussed the health and environmental challenges facing Belize, including deforestation, water pollution and high rates of teen pregnancy. She highlighted the importance of teaching teens responsible decision-making with regard to their sexual and reproductive health, to protect their own lives, and the environment. The other presenter was Dorothy Le, a former student activist at UCLA who forged alliances among campaigns like the Campus Climate Challenge and Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance, who currently serves as the Southern California Organizer for the California Student Sustainability Coalition. She spoke about how our generation's greatest challenge—the climate crisis—can be solved if young people begin to understand how global issues are interconnected and work together for a more just and sustainable world!
