Water is crucial for sustainable development, including the preservation of our natural environment and the alleviation of poverty and hunger. Water is indispensable for human health and well-being. Currently 1.1 billion people do not have access to clean water. Water scarcity and contamination disproportionately impact low income women and girls. For many girls who must walk for miles to access clean water, school is not a reality. Without a basic education or the ability to get a formal wage-earning job, many women become locked into a vicious cycle of poverty. This has a ripple effect that impacts communities and countries socially, economically and environmentally.
World Water Day 2009
On March 16, 2009, the United Nations released its third World Water
Development Report "Water in a Changing World" at the 5th World Water
Forum in Istanbul, Turkey. According to
the report, population growth, climate change, reckless irrigation and
chronic waste are placing the world's water supplies at serious risk.
