Volunteers met in South Minneapolis to hear from Sierra Club President Robbie Cox and former Minnesota Senate Majority leader John Hottinger before heading out to give out hundreds of light bulbs and collect over 200 petition signatures.

Sierra Club Powers Clean Energy Politics

Watching the Pennsylvania Democratic Presidential Debate you would think environmental and energy issues are no longer salient - but various interest groups are working hard to make them central to the 2008 Election at every political level. The Sierra Club’s Power 2 Change campaign recently toured various green projects in Minneapolis.

On Monday, April 14th, John Hottinger and the Minnesota Sierra Club hosted the Campus "Energy Future" Tour to highlight the improvements and advancements that are being made at Macalester and Augsburg colleges and the University of Minnesota and to talk with the student, faculty and staff leaders who are spearheading these efforts. The Macalester wind turbine is shown at left. The group also visited the Macalester EcoHouse.

Press release: Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak: New clean energy jobs "not only green for the economy, but also green for our pocketbooks. We need to send that message to all candidates, up and down the ballot." Read more.

Wednesday morning, volunteers and staff met at the Fort Snelling light rail station to begin canvassing the Hiawatha Light Rail line collecting hundreds of petition signatures, signing up volunteers, and handing out flyers about the campaign. At 12:00, about 10 volunteers and staff (decked out in bright yellow P2C shirts) stood with Mayor R.T. Rybak, State Senate Assistant Majority Leader Tarryl Clark, and former State Senator John Hottinger in front of City Hall and the Hiawatha LRT station to announce the Power2Change campaign and report release.
