Oakland, CA -- Today, Vice President Joe Biden announced that he has selected Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) to be his running mate. The selection of Senator Harris is a historic decision as she becomes the first Black woman and first person of Indian descent to be nominated for national office by a major party.

A cosponsor of the Green New Deal who has a record of holding polluters accountable, Senator Harris recently joined with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to unveil the Climate Equity Act. The legislative proposal commits to centering frontline communities in climate and environmental action.

In response, Sierra Club President Ramon Cruz released the following statement:

“Vice President Joe Biden’s selection of Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate cements this ticket as the strongest ever for proposed climate action. We are confident the Biden-Harris partnership will prioritize climate -- and climate justice -- in their administration, while restoring the United States as a global leader in tackling the crisis.

“This historic announcement from former Vice President Biden stands in stark contrast to the Trump Administration’s anti-science, anti-climate agenda. While Trump and his corrupt Administration have worked tirelessly to dismantle bedrock clean air and water safeguards and abandon all climate action efforts, the Biden-Harris policy proposals are the boldest we’ve ever seen.

“The Sierra Club applauds former Vice President Biden’s selection of Senator Harris, and we will work tirelessly to elect them, and then turn their policies and platforms into reality.”
