SIERRA CLUB ENDORSES CHAFEE Conservation Group Praises Work to Protect Rhode Island’s Environment
Providence, RI, The Rhode Island Chapter of the Sierra Club today announced its full endorsement of Senator Lincoln Chafee for re-election to the Senate. At a press conference in front of the forthcoming Warwick Commuter Rail Station, for which Chafee helped secure funding, the Sierra Club endorsed the Senator for both the Primary and General Elections.
"We are very pleased to announce today that the Sierra Club officially endorses Senator Chafee for re election," said Carl Pope, Executive Director of the Sierra Club, standing with the Senator in Warwick. "We are confident that he will continue to protect Rhode Island’s and the Nation’s environment in the Senate for many years to come. Senator Chafee is a key leader in our work towards a pro-environment majority in the Senate.”
Senator Chafee understands well the conservationist tradition of the Republican Party, beginning with Theodore Roosevelt. In a Congress that has recently tried to dismantle several key environmental protections, Senator Chafee has instead embraced that conservationist tradition and worked to find smart solutions to our environmental challenges. He has consistently demonstrated independence and leadership on issues ranging from clean air, to global warming, to cleaning up toxic waste, and protecting special places and wildlife.
"We are deeply grateful to Senator Chafee for his work to use smart economic development to protect the environment,” said Alison Buckser, Chapter Chair of the Rhode Island Sierra Club. “His Brownfield Revitalization Act has provided for the clean-up and redevelopment of abandoned and polluted spaces throughout the state. For example, Johnson and Wales was recently provided with a grant to redevelop a Brownfield into student housing with green spaces and jogging paths because of this bill. He is a true environmental champion who leads the fight to protect Rhode Island’s environment."
Along with the endorsement, the Sierra Club will lend its volunteer strength to Senator Chafee's campaign.
"We pledge to do all we can to help ensure Senator Chafee is re elected," concluded Buckser. " Sierra Club volunteers will work with the campaign to contact voters about his exemplary environmental record. We look forward to a victory party for the environment on election night and to many more years of Lincoln Chafee fighting for the environment as a U.S. Senator."
