Leading Presidential Contenders, Except Thompson

All Acknowledge Reality of Global Warming in New Interviews

Sierra Club Distributes Clean Energy Future Checklists in Early States

Washington, D.C--In interviews to be broadcast this evening on the CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, all of the leading presidential contenders, except for Sen. Fred Thompson, acknowledge that global warming is happening. Each responded to the question, "Is the global warming threat overblown?" Only Sen. Fred Thompson and Gov. Mike Huckabee express any doubts about the overwhelming scientific consensus that global warming is real, is happening, and is a result of human activity.

The Sierra Club is continuing its ongoing global warming education projects in New Hampshire and Iowa as those states prepare to make critical choices in their first-in-the-nation contests. As part of these efforts, the Sierra Club is distributing "Clean Energy Future" checklists in these two early states.

Statement of Cathy Duvall, Sierra Club Political Director

"In marked contrast with the current administration’s years of denial and evasion on this issue, it is extremely satisfying that nearly all of the leading candidates from both parties acknowledge that global warming is real and must be dealt with.

"The leading Democratic contenders have gone a step further and proposed bold, visionary and highly-detailed proposals to combat global warming and put us on the road to energy independence.

"Among Republicans, Sen. McCain has long been an important advocate on this issue and Gov. Huckabee has also recently expressed his support for a cap-and-trade approach to fighting global warming.

"The key question is whether this concern about global warming translates into support for more of the same outdated, failed energy technologies of the past or whether addressing the challenge becomes an opportunity to move us in a different direction by jumpstarting the new clean energy economy. We are distributing Clean Energy Future checklists in both Iowa and New Hampshire so that regardless of their party, citizens can check where the candidates stand on the policies necessary to bring America’s new energy future to life."
