Bush spilling some whoppers

Sierra Club Quiz
Spot the Bush Whoppers!

February 2, 2005

President Bush will give his State of the Union address tonight. We don't know exactly what he'll say about the environment, but we're pretty sure that if he even mentions it, he'll try to pull the wool over the eyes of the American public. Remember, these guys brought you a “Clear Skies” program that increases air pollution and a “Healthy Forest” plan that saves trees by cutting them down.

So, will you be able to spot it if the President starts telling Texas tall tales? Test your preparedness by taking our "Spot the Bush Whopper" quiz. Of the following six incredulity-inducing environmental statements, which three are the actual Bush environmental “whoppers”? We made up the other three, although we can't guarantee the Bush administration won't try to steal them.

“Nuclear power certainly answers a lot of our issues. It certainly answers the environmental issue.”
“These people who worry so much about saving every single tree -- they obviously haven't got a hardwood floor to stand on.”
“We need an energy bill that encourages consumption.”
“Fuel standards are not a black and white issue. I'm from Texas and, let me tell you, trucks and SUVs represent who we are - strong and powerful. Take away our trucks, and we might as well be French.”
“There are some monuments where the land is so widespread, they just encompass as much as possible. And the integral part of the precious part, so to speak, I guess all land is precious, but the part that the people uniformly would not want to spoil, will not be despoiled.”
“This administration strives to be creatively pragmatic when it comes to balancing our environment and the national security. Do we want to put a few polar bears ahead of our own homeland?”
