Help pass Monterey County's fracking ban: Measure Z

So many candidates, propositions, and issues (and not a little craziness) pulling us in so many directions as November 8th approaches! In the midst of all this, it might be easy to skip over the struggle in Monterey County. That would be a shame because it has the potential for a groundbreaking impact on the Club's efforts "to keep it in the ground." Yes, Measure Z — placed on the ballot with over 16,000 signatures — bans fracking. But it goes much further. It also bans any new wells and bans current wastewater injection wells.

Organized as Protect Monterey County, residents and volunteers from around the state have been working hard to make Measure Z a reality come November 8th. But time is short and the opposition is strong. The oil companies operating in the county, Chevron and Aera Energy (owned by Shell and ExxonMobil), have thrown millions into the anti-Z campaign. And, no surprise, Protect Monterey County has raised a fraction of that amount.

The residents of Monterey County need our help to protect their drinking water and farmland. Contacting voters is key to ensuring that they do vote and that they cast their vote in favor of Measure Z. The organizers also need funds to conduct this effort.

WhatYouCanDo:

  • Call voters from your home and talk to them about Measure Z. Organizers will give you a script and phone numbers.

  • Host a phone bank. Prefer to make calls surrounded by friends? Great — organizers will train you and them to make it happen.

  • Knock on doors to talk to voters in Monterey County. Caravans will be traveling from the Bay Area to Monterey October 15-16, October 22-23, October 29-30 and November 6-7

  • Host a fundraiser in your home or community center.

And if those options aren’t enough, there’s a music benefit for Measure Z this Saturday, October 15th, at the Pacific Grove Performing Arts Center. Give this group a listen — they’ll be there.
