Help Hide the Nuclear Waste!

The Big Book of Bush

The Energy Department’s plans for revitalizing the nation’s nuclear industry have hit a snag: What to do with all the nuclear waste? Which solution is the Department of Energy promoting?

(A) Recycling low-level waste from decommissioned nuclear power plants and weapons facilities into scrap metal that could be used in consumer products like zippers, orthodontic braces, hip replacements, and lawn chairs.

(B) Sending 77,000 tons of radioactive waste by rail and truck through 43 states to Yucca Mountain, 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas. Congress’s Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board criticized the data behind the Department of Energy’s rosy estimates of the safety of the site as "weak to moderate."

(C) Both A and B.
