Rating the Resorts

Want to know if your favorite ski area does right by the environment or is just putting on a good show? The Ski Area Environmental Scorecard grades the 70 largest ski resorts in the western United States on their green policies and management. Produced by the Ski Area Citizens’ Coalition, a group of nonprofit conservation organizations, the project rates the areas on 12 critical issues, including development of undisturbed land; damage to wetlands, old-growth forests, and roadless areas; snowmaking operations; and water and wildlife management. Resorts are rewarded for protecting wildlife habitat, reducing auto use, and recycling. At right are the heroes and the zeroes.
